 SPORT INJURY REHAB

Picture
Athletic Trainers (Athlete Therapists) help people affected by injury, illness or disability through movement and exercise, manual therapy, education and advice.

We understand that no two patients or injuries are the same. Because of this our team tailor treatment and rehabilitation to each of our individual patients. We make sure our patients are comfortable and well informed while undergoing treatment.

We have a high reputation for being professional and our staff who are chosen for their skills, experience, and treatment approach. We promote a culture of learning, reflection and knowledge sharing to continually enhance our service.

COMMON SPORTS INJURIES

Experiencing any of these requires you to find professional treatment to ensure you do not make any problem worse.

1. Ligament damage - Sprains affect ligaments which connection bones to bones. They are strong tissues which provide stability to joints and ensure correct movement and function. When ligaments are damaged or stretched the joint will be unstable and can lead to a inability to support itself under load and can lead to worse damage if not rehabilitated correctly. Common ligament injuries occur in the knee of which ACL and MCL are at most risk due to the direction at which most injuries occur.

2. Shin Splints - Shin splints are common to sports which involve contact with hard surfaces such as tennis, netball and athletics. It can result from poor strength, improper footwear and/or poor running mechanics. If rest and treatment is not applied early in its development then longer-term chronic injuries can occur which leads to long period of inactivity. This injury should never be pushed through in terms of pain.

3. Tennis and Golfers elbow
- This injury occurs during the excess force exerted on the bone during repetitive sporting movements. If not treated, the bone can change in structure causing the injury to progressively grow worse. A combination of physiotherapy and strength training is needed.

4. Hamstring Tears -
A hamstring strain can be a pull, a partial tear, or a complete tear. Muscle strains are graded according to their severity. A grade 1 strain is mild and usually heals readily; a grade 3 strain is a complete tear of the muscle that may take months to heal.

5. Back Pain -
There is a substantial amount of medical literature supporting specific physical therapy exercises for the treatment of low back pain. While most episodes of low back pain are self limiting and will get better on their own, active exercise plays an important role in helping reduce the patient's pain and improving subsequent function in patients with low back pain

6. Tendonitis - Tendinitis (also tendonitis), meaning inflammation of a tendon, is a type of tendinopathy often confused with the more common tendinosis, which has similar symptoms but requires different treatment. Tendinosis, means or sometimes called chronic tendinitis or chronic tendon injury, is damage to a tendon at a cellular level. It is thought to be caused by microtears in the connective tissue in and around the tendon. The tendon connects muscle to bone and can take long periods and specialist treatment to heal correctly.
